What are long lines for dogs?
Let’s talk about long lines, the Pros, and the Cons, and why we recommend them for Spanish rescue dogs.
If you're a new owner of a dog, whether that is a Spanish rescue dog or not, you should seriously consider owning a long line. What is a long line? It is exactly, that, an extra-long lead. Long lines tend to be lighter than standard leads and come with some pros and cons, but they are a wonderful tool for building trust and helping your rescue pup thrive.
Cons of Long Lines: The Practical Side
Let's be realistic, long lines are not perfect. You need to be prepared for wraparounds (trees, legs, you name it!), tangles and knots. I have lost count of the number of times I have de-tangled one before leaving the house, only to find I have to do the same again when it comes to using it when I’m out on a walk! Biothane material can be less prone to knotting than fabric but may be more difficult to hold on to in some situations.
A long line trailing on the ground is easy to step on, which has its advantages, but you need to be mindful of where it is when you are walking.
You also have less immediate control than with a short lead. It'll take a moment to reel your dog in. Don't use a long line in areas where instant control is vital, like near busy roads.
If there are many other dog walkers and dogs around you, a long line may not be the best idea., that is where they can become a trip hazard for other people and they can become wrapped around trees and legs of humans and dogs alike, if your dog is running around playing.
The Pros of Long Lines for Dogs
The benefits are strong enough to outweigh the downsides. Long lines enable your dog to explore and play safely. Your dog gets space for sniffing, running, and being a dog, with the safeguard of a lead should it be needed.
A long line is your safety net while your dog practices those recall commands. You might find your dog’s recall can be fantastic without any distractions, but can you say the same if you are needing to recall them away from playing with another dog or chasing a squirrel?
If a situation needs de-escalation, step on the line quickly. It's great for preventing unwanted playtime if your dog is too excitable around others. Standing on the line is quicker than bending over and picking it up, once you have stopped the dog you are then able to pick up the lead and have more control.
Humans and dogs need happy chemicals, more movement equals more endorphins which is a definite win.
A long line gives a new dog a chance to learn their new garden's boundaries with an added safety measure. No one wants to find out in the first few days that your dog can jump a 6-foot fence, as unlikely as it is, it’s not completely impossible! If you have another dog at home and you have already done the introduction, having a long line of them outside in the garden gives them the freedom to explore and engage with the other dog(s), with that backup should you need it.
Are long lines the same as long retractable leads?
Retractable leads may seem similar but have some major drawbacks, they come with weight restrictions so if you decide to use one make sure you get the correct one for your dog. Retractable leads are thin, if your dog is pulling they are difficult to manually put in if you need to.
Retractable lines come with a heavier handle with the mechanism in it, these are not made to be dropped to the ground and dragged behind the dog. Long lines are thicker, lighter and able to be dropped on the ground. Many long lines also come with a handle at the end which I would personally recommend. Some dogs may not yet be ready for you to drop the line and let it trail behind them, in this case, you can hold the handle while the dog still has a lot of space and freedom.
Lengths of long lines for dogs
Expect long lines between 5 and 30 metres (sometimes even longer!). UK prices usually range from £10 to £30 depending on the material and features, some may be reflective, and some can have a handle. We would recommend buying a bright colour so the line is easy to see.
Should I buy a long line for my dog?
Rescue dogs, especially those from Spain, may have had limited experiences with on-lead walks or open spaces. A long line unlocks exploration and confidence-building while maintaining safety. If you fall in love with a Spanish rescue dog, invest in a long line.
Long lines may take some getting used to, but they offer fantastic benefits for both dog and owner. They're particularly helpful for rescue dogs, giving them some freedom with the security they need during their adjustment and training.
